The Shop at Old Austerlitz

It has been a while since I've posted, and it has been a very busy summer so far. One of the projects I have been working on is The Shop at Old Austerlitz for the Austerlitz Historical Society . The Society operates a beautiful property in Columbia County, New York and this is the first actual shop they have opened on the property. So I thought I'd give you a tour, and an example of what can be done with very little money, some good volunteers, and a bit of creativity.

Buy the Darn Bird Lamp!

We all know that our homes are a reflection of who we are, and yet we often stifle who we actually are because of fear. We are afraid what others will think, we are afraid our ideas may not be in good taste, and we are afraid to spend money on what we perceive as frivolous things. Regarding what others may think - the best cure for that is age (if you're very young, you'll just have to trust me). As for "good taste," remember what George Bernard Shaw said: "He's a man of great common sense and good taste - meaning thereby a man without originality or moral courage." And then there is the money thing. Yes, it is really true that mere things cannot bring you happiness, but it is also true that expressing your creativity and wonderment at the world can bring you great joy. Don't be afraid to splurge on a frivolous unique item now and then.

Now, regarding this lamp. It is crazy and unique and just this-side-of-vulgar, but isn't it wonderful! It would retain those qualities in any style room -- be it traditional or modern. It would forever be a topic of conversation. Unless you are aiming for the ambience of the local Holiday Inn, a room needs a bit of fun to really come alive. So buy the darn lamp already!

The above room is chic traditional - nice, but the unexpected modern art brings the room to life.

A very nice mud room, but it is the model house (frivolous and non-functional) that makes it interesting.

Here, it is the wallpaper that really pops. I would place a traditional gilt framed portrait on the wall - to create a nice juxtaposition.

A faux palm tree in the living room!

The graphic coat over the sofa makes the room pop.

This is a beautiful room, but it is that unexpected Polar Bear (and painting) that adds personality.

The drum-as-table gives this room personality.

Beautiful -- again traditional, but notice the lamps.

Okay, now I'm just having fun with you (I'd bet you would never forget a dinner held in this room)!
