The Shop at Old Austerlitz

It has been a while since I've posted, and it has been a very busy summer so far. One of the projects I have been working on is The Shop at Old Austerlitz for the Austerlitz Historical Society . The Society operates a beautiful property in Columbia County, New York and this is the first actual shop they have opened on the property. So I thought I'd give you a tour, and an example of what can be done with very little money, some good volunteers, and a bit of creativity.

FANTASTIC Packaging Design

I love packaging design. There are times when I will purchase a product for the packaging alone. When it is good--really good, a package can be a little work of art. Of course, no amount of clever packaging can save an inferior product; there are times when the best thing a designer can do is to tell the manufacturer that they need to improve the item! Let's not worry about that today. I thought it would be fun to look at some amazing design work:

"News of the Wooled" designed by Gwyn M. Lewis as a self-promotion. USA.

Pchak (Tree Hollow), a series of containers for nuts and dried fruit. Designed by Backbone Branding of Armenia. I think these are brilliant!

"Mulled Wine", a Christmas promotional item for clients designed by Buddy Creative. The wine bottle is wrapped in an engraved rubber sleeve which can then be used to print holiday wrapping paper. The gift was delivered in a box containing ink and instructions. United Kingdom.

"Royale Salute" alcohol by Pernod Ricard. Designer Tom Lane created a beautiful keepsake box referencing a 1520 meeting between the kings of England and France. United Kingdom.

"McQueen Parfum for her" An amazing bottle design for a scent based on night-blooming flowers (jasmine, tuberose and yang yang). Incidentally, the parfum is priced at $385 per bottle. France.

"Abeeja Honey" is a concept piece designed for a small honey producer by Andres Guerrero. The "wings" pop out of the single label. Spain.

"Good Hair Day Pasta" is a concept piece designed by Nikita. Russia.

"Siya Fruit Drinks" designed by Stepan Azaryan of Backbone Branding. It appears that there is actually fruit within the bottle; it is an illusion created with great photography and a clever bottle design. Armenia.

"Jeju Water Bottle" is an award winning design by Cloudandco Design Studio. The elegant bottle appears to have gentle water ripples on one side. I would keep these bottles and use as vases. Korea.

"Two Eggs" was actually a student assignment at the Universidad Anahuac Mexico Norte. The challenge was to create a package for only two eggs using a single piece of cardboard. The designers are Aimee Dominguez & Daniela Fonseca. Mexico. Give it a try -- it's not so easy! (and send me a photo if you do)
