The Shop at Old Austerlitz

It has been a while since I've posted, and it has been a very busy summer so far. One of the projects I have been working on is The Shop at Old Austerlitz for the Austerlitz Historical Society . The Society operates a beautiful property in Columbia County, New York and this is the first actual shop they have opened on the property. So I thought I'd give you a tour, and an example of what can be done with very little money, some good volunteers, and a bit of creativity.

Glorious Imperfection, A Home in Bath

When architect Patrick Williams and his partner Neri discovered the imminent sale of  a 1748 townhouse in Bath, England, they jumped at the opportunity. The house, built by John Wood the Elder (the architect famous for Bath's Royal Circus and Queen Square), had not been on the market since 1809. Surprisingly, the house, though needing considerable work, was fairly intact (poverty and neglect often being the best means of preservation). Perhaps more amazing, the new owners decided to restore the house, keeping all the patina and wear that comes naturally to an eighteenth century house. (Sadly, most Americans would have gutted the building to ensure that every surface was new and pristine -- any hints of history could be recreated by means of artificial distressing, as long as it still looked new. Do I sound bitter?)

The décor is decidedly British; that wonderful and practical ease that is not afraid to show a bit of aged elegance. The results fit the house perfectly.

Patrick and Neri (and their two daughters Wren and Bonnie) Also operate their home as a bed & breakfast--Berdoulat and Breakfast. They have two rooms, that can be booked at www.berdoulatandbreakfast.co.uk

Neri, whipping up a wonderful breakfast.
