The Shop at Old Austerlitz

It has been a while since I've posted, and it has been a very busy summer so far. One of the projects I have been working on is The Shop at Old Austerlitz for the Austerlitz Historical Society . The Society operates a beautiful property in Columbia County, New York and this is the first actual shop they have opened on the property. So I thought I'd give you a tour, and an example of what can be done with very little money, some good volunteers, and a bit of creativity.

7 Jewelry Designers

There are so many creative people out there making beautiful and amazing things. I thought I'd share with you a few of the jewelry designers whose work I find interesting and exciting. The seven I have chosen work in a wide range of mediums, often challenging our idea of what jewelry can be.

ALEX SEPKUS
A native of Lithuania, Alex Sepkus immigrated to the United States in 1988. Alex met his soon-to-be business partner, Jeff Feero, a few years later and with a combined pool of $10,000 dollars between them, they opened Alex Sepkus Studios in New York. His unique and very intricate work is now available in dozens of shops across the US including Bergdorf Goodman. www.alexsepkus.com

SOPHIE MONET
Sophie Monet Okulick, fresh out of college, returned to Venice, California determined to put her design skills to work. With a little help from her father John Okulick, a sculptor, she soon began designing rings and necklaces using exotic woods, semi-precious stones and metals. Her work is earthy and yet sophisticated. She quickly developed a following in Southern California and you can see more of it at sophiemonetjewelry.com

YOSHIKO YAMAMOTO
A master metalsmith, Yoshiko Yamamoto has been creating incredible jewelry since the 1960's. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museum shows including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Museum of Art and Design in New York. Her pieces are stunning and always a bit unexpected. studio533-yoshiko.com

JENNY KLEMMING
Jenny Klemming grew up in Malmö, Sweden.  In 2010 she graduated from HDK, Gothenburg. Her elegant and somewhat ethereal work is inspired by nature--most often rocks and twigs. She has won numerous design awards in Sweden, as well as, internationally.

PAOLA
This 25 year old Venezuelan designer is actually an architect, and though times are quite tough in her native country, she is compelled to be a "maker of things." Using the most basic materials--cotton thread--she creates colorful necklaces that are remarkably beautiful in their simplicity. Her very reasonably priced pieces are available from her online etsy.com shop, and I encourage you to take a look. MiloNecklaces

REBECCA HANNON
Rebecca Hannon is an RISD graduate and worked five years as a goldsmith in New York City. She then attended the Akademie der Bildeden Kuenste in Munich, Germany on a Fulbright scholarship. She currently maintains her own workshop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rebecca works in a wide variety of mediums often using unexpected materials to produce intriguing pieces. The work I have chosen here is all created with laminates and cable. rebeccahannon.com

SUSAN SNYDER
Susan Snyder came to jewelry making from a surprising place, she worked as a psychotherapist for fifteen years. Like many creative people she felt the need to create pulling her toward a career as an artist. She works with sterling silver. Her minimalist designs (probably informed, she says, by her father's work as a modernist architect and her mother's own modernist collection of jewelry) are very refined and expertly crafted. She currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. susansnyderjewelry.com
